The Palo Alto High School girls’ water polo team (9-10, 4-8) hopes to begin a De Anza league championship run against Los Altos High School tonight at Henry M. Gunn High School.
The Vikings have lost in both encounters with the Eagles this season, 8-4 and 6-5, but are confident in their ability to get revenge when it matters most, according to junior attacker Jacqueline Furrier.
“Both times we’ve played them it’s been pretty close,” Furrier said. “I’m pretty confident we can pull out a win today.”
To change their fortunes against Los Altos, the Vikings will focus on teamwork, according to freshman attacker Haley Chalmers.
“We all need to stay focused,” Chalmers said. “We can’t get mad at each other, we have to be a team.”
The Viking’s starting goalie, junior Maddie Kinnaman, suffered a concussion and will not be able to take part for tonight’s game. Senior Hannah Bundy will take over as goalie for the time being, according to Furrier.
“It’s a bummer that Maddie can’t come, but hopefully we can still pull through and get a win,” Chalmers said.
The game will take place at 4:20 p.m today at Gunn. The winner will proceed to play in the De Anza league semifinals tomorrow, also at Gunn.
