Last night was Oscar night, when America saw its favorite (and least favorite) stars wear all manners of designer clothing with varying success.

This is our review of the few stars whose clothing choices really made them shine on Oscar night.

The Ladies

Ladies first. Jessica Chastain (“Zero Dark Thirty”) wore a beautiful, simple tan strapless Armani Prive dress with parallel zig-zag seams. Her dress complimented her figure and skin tone perfectly. Her hair was elegantly curled, old-Hollywood style, completing her look.

Amy Adams (“The Master”) looked mature and right at home on the Red Carpet in her Oscar de la Renta dress. She wore her hair in a bun with only a wisp along side her face, which wonderfully countered her lovely gray gown. Too many women wore dresses that went out at the bottom and failed to pull it off, but Adams nailed it.

Amanda Seyfried (“Les Miserables”) also stunned in Alexander McQueen. She captured viewers with a beautiful lilac and cream gown. Her hair was tastefully teased and her makeup done flawlessly, complimenting her dress perfectly.

Sandra Bullock (“The Blind Side”) emulated perfection in an off-the-runway gown by Elie Saab. Her hair was simple, tucked  behind one ear with a dazzling hair piece. We have nothing else to say, she looked beautiful as usual.

The Gentlemen

It is always easier to dress a man well, but little mistakes count for much more on men too. For some reason, several Oscars men made the mistake of wearing over-sized or floppy bow ties. Despite the various mistakes made by many of those at last night’s ceremony, several men stood out as well dressed.

Daniel Day-Lewis (“Lincoln”) wore a beautiful Domenico Vacca midnight blue shawl lapel tuxedo, demonstrating his awareness for trending fashion. His droopy bow tie, unfortunately, did detract from the magnificence of his tux.

Bradley Cooper (“Silver Linings Playbook”) looked absolutely spot on in his custom made Tom Ford tuxedo. It was a classic look with a modern fit, and he pulled it off very well.

Finally, as always, Robert Downey Jr. (“The Avengers”) looked dashing. He made a daring move to wear a black suit with black shirt and black tie — a combination that leaves lesser men looking cheap and cocky — and completely stole the stage. Maybe it was his pocket square.

All in all, we were pretty disappointed. You know that feeling you have when you see beautiful clothes? We only felt that with some of the night’s gowns and tuxedos.

Nonetheless, almost all the stars looked elegant and appropriate. This year’s red carpet was much classier than last year’s; skin was covered and there were no major wardrobe malfunctions (unless you count JLaw tripping on her way up the stairs). The main complaints we had were inappropriate hair (either on their heads or faces) and oversized bow ties.
