Palo Alto High School seniors Leah Bleich and Spencer Carlson perform at a previous Open Mic.

According to senior Leah Bleich, the Open Mic Coordinator for the Teen Arts Council, the event will give teenagers a chance to share their talents without being a formal member of a choir or theater group.

“Open Mic is a place where people can have the opportunity to perform anything they want,” Bleich said. “At Open Mic, I think it’s important that people can find a safe place to try new things.”

The performances, Bleich said, range anywhere from singing and juggling to stand up comedy. The Council is still accepting acts to perform on Saturday.

The Teen Arts Council, an arts initiative of the Palo Alto Children’s Theater, has been actively promoting creative performance since being founded in 2009.

“We’re a teen leadership group,” Bleich said. “We provide a platform for people to have a creative outlet in any way that they feel necessary.”

Open Mic has been a yearlong tradition for the Teen Arts Council, and the Council is looking to increase its frequency in the months to come.

“We had four last year, so this will be our fifth,” Bleich said. “I hope to have them more often this year.”

Bleich is anticipating a large turnout at Saturday’s event, and hopes that members of the Palo Alto community will come to perform or watch.

“I would encourage anybody that’s curious about it to come check it out,” Bleich said.
