“The Year of Fog” is this year’s Silicon Valley Reads, a program that promotes one book per year that they think is appropriate for all seven and a half million people in the Silicon Valley. – Haelin ChoSince 2003, Silicon Valley Reads has helped enrich the community by promoting quality literary content through its Book of the Year program.
This year, the spotlight has shone on The Year of Fog by local author Michelle Richmond, which tells the captivating story of a woman named Abby and her relentless search for the six-year-old daughter of her fiancée. Palo Alto High School students interested in the book can ask their school librarians for a copy of the novel.
Silicon Valley Reads designed the award to encourage reading for the entire community. The organization annually selects one book and promotes discussions on the reading.
Silicon Valley Reads is sponsored by many different organizations including the San Jose Mercury News and the Santa Clara County Library.
According to librarian Rachel Kellerman, Paly recently received some free copies of the novel from the Friends of the Library program, a volunteer organization dedicated to supporting Palo Alto libraries.
Kellerman said that the book will appeal to fans of Jodi Picoult books and anyone who enjoys “family-oriented mysteries.”
To promote discussion, Richmond plans to visit the Palo Alto Art Center Auditorium on Thursday, March 17, to present her novel. In addition, a showing of the 2008 movie Changeling, which also involves child disappearances, will be held 7 p.m. on March 24 at the same place.
Other events, such as author visits and meetings open to anyone who read the book, have also been planned. Richmond is scheduled to visit several libraries in February and March. For a complete list of events, click here.
Younger children can read Pouch! by David Ezra Stein, One by Kathryn Otoshi and Alabama Moon by Watt Key, the companions to The Year of Fog.
