The Philosophy Talk episode recorded at Paly in May will air at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 5, according to English teacher Lucy Filppu.
Listeners can tune into KALW, FM 91.7, to enjoy the episode titled “Philosophy for the Young: Corrupting or Empowering?”. It will be a discussion of the merits and costs of exposing youth to philosophy, according to the Philosophy Talk website. The blurb reads:
“Socrates was executed for corrupting the youth. In America, youth below college age are usually not exposed to philosophy in the classroom. Is philosophy all that dangerous? Should it be taught to teenagers? Or would this lead to a generation of self-absorbed and skeptical young people, shirking their duties in order to worry about the meaning of life?”
The episode features Stanford professors Ken Taylor and John Perry, hosts of Philosophy Talk, as well as guest speaker Jack Bowden, author of The Dream Weaver and If You Can Read This: The Philosophy of Bumper Stickers. Paly senior Charles Lockner and a student from Menlo School voiced their opinions during the program as well, according to earlier Voice coverage of the event.
About 150 students attended the very successful taping, Filppu said.
