The attendance policy that has been in effect for the entire school year will apply to senior cut day, according to Assistant Principal Kim Diorio.
On senior cut day, which traditionally occurs the Monday after AP testing, very few seniors attend their classes. Senior cut day has not been recognized by the administration as a legitimate excuse for missing school.
Many parents of seniors have called in today to excuse their students.
“We’ve been getting a lot of calls,” said career adviser Christina Owen, who was working in the attendance office today. “Parents have been giving some interesting excuses.”
This means that if students’ absences are excused by a parent, they will not face consequences from the school, according to Diorio. If an absence is not excused, however, it will be marked as a cut and the customary attendance rules will apply, according to Diorio.
“The [Education] Code is pretty clear,” Diorio said. “If it’s excused by a parent, it’s excused.”
For the purposes of bookkeeping, the administration is entering seniors’ excused absences into the computer differently. However, this difference will not affect students, Diorio said.
“The consequences for students will be the same [as usual],” Diorio said.
