Anticipation is growing among the student community over the Palo Alto High School Choir’s “Glee”-inspired concert on Tuesday at the Haymarket Theater.
Featuring a combination of songs from the hit TV show “Glee” and other musical selections with the choreography associated with Glee club performances, the concert has sparked significant interest among students. The Facebook event had 186 confirmed guests as of Feb. 3.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing the choir’s interpretation of the ‘Glee’ soundtrack,” junior Rachel Mewes said. “I love the show and I know the choir will do really well.”
Three “Glee” numbers and four other selections will balance the program of the traditionally pop-themed Valentine’s concert.
Spectrum choir will perform the “Glee” soundtrack favorite “Somebody to Love” and the Paly Men’s Chorus will sing the mash-up of “It’s My Life/Confessions,” according to junior Lara Cutkosky.
Freshman choir has an eclectic program, including “Stand By Me” from “Glee” as well as “Piu non si trovano” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, according to freshman Annie Vainshtein.
The Madrigals will perform a Bach fugue reminiscent of the dramatic a cappella vocals in between scenes in “Glee.”
Concert Choir will round out the program with “Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson and “Party in the USA” by Miley Cyrus.
Last June, the entire choral program performed the “Glee” version of “Don’t Stop Believin'” at the 2009 Baccalaureate ceremony at Stanford’s Memorial Auditorium.
At the time, “The first episode of Glee had just come out, and we had so much fun that we decided to make our traditional Valentine’s concert a ‘Glee’ concert,” Cutkosky said.
According to Cutkosky, Choir Director Michael Najar was responsible for the music choices.
“At the beginning, we all kind of hated ‘Party in the USA,’ but it’s grown on us,” Cutkosky said.
The Paly Choir will perform at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at the Paly Haymarket Theater. Tickets may be purchased at the door for $5.
