The Paly Dance Company and Bhangra Club coordinated to dance Bhangra and modern routines and sell scarves at lunch on Wednesday, Dec. 9 in the quad to raise money for Steva, an education organization.
Steva helps young Indian girls receive an education, according to senior Sana Bakshi, Bhangra Club co-president.
“It [Steva] benefits young girls in India who don’t have the chance to get educated,” Bakshi said.
Bakshi has worked with Steva in the past and wanted to use dance to raise money for the organization.
“We [the Bhangra club members] wanted to perform,” Bakshi said. “Why not just make a fundraiser?”
According to Kylie Sloan, PDC co-captain, the dance performance at lunch was intended to draw people to buy Indian scarves to support Steva.
Jujhaar Singh, Bhangra Club co-president and choreographer, was proud of the hard work that went into the dance performance.
“I could feel the energy of the people behind me,” Singh said. “These people have worked so hard.”
Members of the Paly Dance club were also pleased with the outcome of the event.
“It was a good opening for the year,” said Sloan. “We liked performing with the Bhangra club because we had more of an audience and support from them [members of the Bhangra club]”.
According to Bakshi, she will continue to sell scarves to benefit Steva and will receive a new shipment of scarves next week. Students wishing to buy scarves must contact Bakshi.
