The Paly boys’ track team is officially done competing this season after the last competing athlete finished 18th in the California Interscholastic Federation State Track and Field Championships, the final meet of the season.
Junior Philip MacQuitty matched his 18th place seed in the 3,200-meter race with a personal best of 9 minutes, 7.23 seconds, more than three seconds faster than his previous personal record. Although MacQuitty was satisfied with his time, he had hoped to improve upon his seed.
“I’m pretty happy with my time, but 18th was not gratifying,” MacQuitty said. “I was expecting to beat my seed time, which I did, but I also thought I’d finish in the top 10 or 12.”
The state meet is the final meet for the regular season, but MacQuitty will continue competing on his own at the Golden West Invitational next weekend and possibly the Nike Outdoor Nationals the weekend after that. He has already achieved the qualifying times for both meets.
At the Golden West Invitational, MacQuitty will compete in the 1,600-meter race.
“I’m trying to break the school record,” MacQuitty said in reference to the 4:15.4 record set in 1968. MacQuitty ran his personal best, 4:20, without any close competitors in a dual meet against Gunn. He will race in more favorable conditions at Golden West with more challenging competition to help him pace himself.
As for next track season, MacQuitty has not begun to set goals yet.
“That [next season] is far away,” MacQuitty said. “I first have to see how I do in cross country.”
MacQuitty will compete in the Golden West Invitational at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, at Folsom High School.
