Recently the California Supreme Court upheld Proposition Eight, a ban on gay marriage, while allowing marriages made before the proposition was passed to remain legal. The Paly Voice asked students what they thought about this decision.
“I think that it is inconsistent with the previous decisions on gay marriage even if you do not believe in gay marriage.”
–Scott Zhuge, sophomore
“It works as a compromise for both sides, but it also does not, as it still limits rights.”
–Sarah Henderson, junior
“If the majority of the population disagrees with the Supreme Court’s decision, that sentiment will eventually manifest itself.”
–Jamie Nakamura, senior
“Everyone has their own rights, the decision is fair because it would not be right to undo the marriages.”
–Melanie Leng, freshman
“I am disappointed with the the results of the decision but I am glad that the people can remain married.”
–Kavitha Subramanian, senior
“I feel that everyone should have equal rights. People don’t like it [gay marriage] because it is a new idea, not because it is wrong”
–Emilee Osagiede, freshman
“While it is good that they did not overturn marriages, it is still bs that they upheld Prop. 8.”
–Miquel Ferrandiz, junior
“It is a good sign that the government is not getting involved and that they [the government] are starting over.”
–Peter Rockhold, freshman
