Auditions for one-acts will be held at 2:15 p.m. on March 5 in the Haymarket Theater.
In past auditions for one-acts at Paly, student directors have auditioned students and then decided collectively who would be cast in each piece.
“There is usually a table with all the writers,” junior Caleb Jones said. “They [the writers] create a document with scenes and monologues from their play. Then the writers meet and decide the cast.”
This year’s auditions will likely be held in this format as well,” according to Theater teacher Kathleen Woods.
Woods is unsure how much of the performance will be written ahead of time.
“We still have to settle on how many pre-written plays versus 24-hours plays there are going to be,” Woods said.
According to Woods, “Daylight” by Jones and “Flathead” by senior Ashley Lamb are the only student written one-acts that will be performed so far.
Before his play is performed at Paly, Jones has to make slight alterations to his one-act, which is about a woman whose mature and immature sides attempt to figure out how to deal with a one night stand.
“In general, I have to make it clear that these [the characters] are not Paly students, that they [the characters] are more mature,” Jones said.
The administration’s concerns prevented “Daylight” from being performed earlier on as the second Brown Bag Lunch show of the year.
Lamb’s comedic one – act was performed last year at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts in a TheaterWorks Playwriting Workshop, according to Woods.
Plays that are not pre-written will be written and performed within the 24 hours leading up to the performance, the same format as December’s Play in a Day, according to Woods.
The one-act’s are being performed in March, which is earlier than usual, because of the Thespian Troupe’s send–off performance of the play they will perform at the Fringe festival in Scotland.
“The Fringe is taking what would typically be the one-act slot in May,” Woods said.
The combination Play in a Day, one-act performance will be on March 21 in the Haymarket Theater.
