Key Club members from local high schools will compete for the title of “Mr. Key Club” at 5 p.m. on Saturday in the Haymarket theater.
The participants will compete in a series of contests which include a swimsuit modeling contest, a talent competition, and a Key Club trivia competition.
“It’s a little different every year,” junior club president Erika Ji said. “Some competitions are not announced in advance to test the agility of our contestants.”
Key Club is divided into regions and districts; Paly Key Club is part of division 34 South (D34S), which includes schools in the southern Bay Area. Paly Key Club will also hold its fifth Mr. Key Club Pageant fundraiser as the January D34S division council meeting.
Key Clubs in Division 34 South will be represented at the pageant. All nine local high schools, including Los Altos High School and Gunn High School, have already chosen their representatives.
According to Ji, Paly’s Key Club elected its representative, freshman James Maa, by a club election.
The proceeds from the event will benefit the Grassroot Soccer program. According to the Grassroot Soccer Web site, the program’s mission is to use “the power of soccer in the fight against AIDS, Grassroot Soccer provides African youth with the knowledge, skills and support to live HIV free.”
Ji hopes the event will serve two purposes.
“I would like it to be a fun experience…something people can enjoy and something that can help the community,” Ji said.
Ji thinks Paly has a good chance of winning the pageant.
“Our contestant [Maa] has a very unique talent,” Ji said. “He has been preparing for [the] competition. I wish him the best of luck.”
Admission to the event is $3. A “meal deal,” which consists of two slices of pizza, salad, and a drink, will be available for an additional $5.
