Canned food drive ends Friday

Students can donate cans to the canned food drive, sponsored by the Palo Alto High School’s Youth Community Service Club until Friday, Dec. 7.

Cans can be brought to students’ fourth period classes where they will be collected and counted by YCS at the end of the week.

“It [the canned food drive] is a competition,” senior YCS president Soo Song said. “You [students] bring in cans, and we count them by ounces. The class to win first gets a pizza party, second place gets a doughnut party and third place gets chocolate or other candy.”

The cans will then be donated to Second Harvest Food Bank, which provides underprivileged families in the community with nutritious meals, especially during the holiday season, according to their website.

This food drive is only one of many YCS sponsored events at Paly.

“We also host the annual holiday gift drive, and we do Jar Wars during Spirit Week,” Song said. “It’s a pretty active club on campus. …In the future we have Care Grams going on in the spring, where students buy balloons and cards for their friends.”

The club also works on many smaller projects.

“Every week at our club meetings we have service projects so members can get involved in community service without having to go to outside events,” Song said. “These include making cards for veterans, or packaging something or making posters.”

YCS meets at lunch on Thursdays in room 215.
