'Choices at Paly' event to be held on Thursday

Parents, students, and teachers will file into the Palo Alto High School library at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26 to see a showcase of “Choices at Paly.”

This event, sponsored by the Parent Teacher Student Association, seeks to “serve the school community with an informational evening,” Assistant Principal Chuck Merritt said.

In hopes of helping students understand the broad spectrum of options available at Paly, “Choices at Paly” will be comprised of exhibits from various elective classes and after-school programs.

According to sculpture teacher David Camner, a group of glass blowers will be staging demonstrations in the glass shop until 8 p.m. Additionally, photography teacher Margo Wixsom will present her classes’ works from this past semester.

“I will have a table for photography work that includes landscape, portraiture and alternative processes like solarizing and double exposures,” Wixsom said. “I will also have examples of Art Spectrum work including paintings, drawings and sketchbooks.”

Along with the glass blowing, photography and art spectrum classes, robotics, home economics, the web team, theatre, choir, band, journalism and video production classes will also be present.

Although some activities, such as glass blowing, are already popular and are appearing at “Choices at Paly” to display their work from first semester, other classes are presenting at the event for additional publicity.

“The reason that I’m attending is to promote the art electives as a whole and to show parents what the electives can include with images as well as the writing and sketchbooks that support academic success across the curriculum at Paly,” Wixsom said.

In addition to Paly elective courses, Camp Anytown, the Parent Teacher Association and several community service programs will represent themselves in the library. Several athletic teams will available in the gym to field questions and comments.

Merritt sees “Choices at Paly” as a way to help uninformed students choose the courses and clubs they want to participate in next year.

“’Choices at Paly’ is for current students and their parents who want more information about electives and other opportunities at Paly,” Merritt said.
