Seniors celebrate Cinco de Mayo on the quad

After school Thursday an estimated 100 seniors crowded into a blocked off area on Paly’s main quad for a Cinco de Mayo celebration, complete with piñatas, chips and salsa, and festive music.

The celebration, a pun on the date 05/05/05, gave the graduating class of ’05 a chance to hang out and relax in the midst of AP testing and college planning. Senior class president Arianna Gianola headed up event preparations, with the help of members of Paly’s student council.

“We think it definitely was a success,” Gianola said. “[ASB Secretary Angelina] Bena estimated we had over 100 people here.”

In order to attend the party, students had to verify they were seniors by showing their student ID cards. Once inside, seniors were allowed all the Tostitos and Safeway Select salsa they could eat and got a chance at whacking “0” and “5” piñatas.

Most who attended the celebration had fun spending time with their friends, and many stuck around after the piñata event to chat and snack on chips.

“The salsa was good,” said senior Holly Wang, who stayed late to help clean up.

The money spent on the celebration was from the senior class fund and Gianola thinks there should be plenty left over to fund another class get-together.

“We’re planning on doing another senior party around June first so that everyone can pick up their cap and gown at the same time [as the party],” Gianola said.
