The Paly bands and orchestra will perform in a debut concert at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18 at the Haymarket Theatre.
The concert will feature Paly’s jazz band, jazz ensemble, and orchestra.
“Everyone will be placed on the stage so that they can get used to performing,” band director Jeff Willner said. “It also gives [the audience] a good dose of what we are.”
The orchestra will perform both traditional and well-recognized pieces, such as hits by Mozart and the Bach Fugue. All jazz ensemble students and select members of the jazz band will showcase improvisation of blues throughout the evening’s concert. The jazz band is slated to perform a cheerful rendition of “Happy Song” and “Decoupage,” while the jazz ensemble has been rehearsing “Journal Square” to perform at the concert.
Despite the large number of newcomers to each of the jazz groups, veterans of Paly’s band program feel confident about their upcoming performance.
“It’ll go well,” junior Garrett Morton, a member of the jazz ensemble, said. “We’re ready and we should sound good. We’ve all been practicing, and we have had rehearsals twice a week.”
“We haven’t been playing the pieces for very long, but I think we can pull it off,” junior Hrishi Srinagesh, a jazz band member, agreed.
The synergy between the Paly jazz groups and the orchestra will most likely last shorter than Paly’s regular concerts, yet band members expect their music to give off vibrant energy and generate positive feedback, according to Willner.
“It’s always really fun, and I don’t think I’ve had any students come up and complain after their performances,” Willner said.
