The colorful, rotating light beams shine on fans as they excitedly jump around, pumping their arms. TREASURE splashes water into the audience. Everyone in the crowd is singing along to the lyrics of “GOING CRAZY,” one of their most popular songs, hyped up by the melodic instrumentals and electronic beats.
The audience held the same energy throughout the night as K-pop boy group TREASURE performed on Thursday for the first time in Oakland at Paramount Theatre.
After their debut in August 2020 under YG Entertainment, TREASURE — a 10-member group consisting of Choi Hyun-suk, Jihoon, Yoshi, Junkyu, Yoon Jae-hyuk, Asahi, Doyoung, Haruto, Park Jeong-woo and So Jung-hwan — has finally brought its stage presence to the United States with their first U.S. Tour, “Special Moment.” Oakland is the third stop out of four in the tour, along with New York City, Washington D.C. and Los Angeles. Despite not being in a sold-out show, the fans’ energy filled the theater with the same intensity as a packed one.
Opening the night with a mix of energetic songs such as “JIK JIN” and “BONA BONA,” TREASURE performed a range of songs picked from its two studio albums, as well as a feature of special unit performances; “THANK YOU,” performed by Asahi and Haruto; “MOVE,” consisting of Jihoon, Junkyu, Jaehyuk, Doyoung and Junghwan; a remix of “G.O.A.T” and “VolKno” by Hyunsuk, Yoshi and Haruto.
Between songs, the members spoke to the audience, expressing their excitement and a mix of nervousness for their first time in the U.S. They spoke fluently in English, and seeing their effort to connect with international fans was both impressive and touching.
Other than performing songs and speaking during the transitions, the concert didn’t have many other opportunities for fan engagement or casual conversation between the members and the audience. We were hoping for more moments for them to acknowledge fans in the crowd, not just the front row, which could have also increased the hour-and-a-half length of their concert without adding demanding choreography
As the show hit the hour mark, TREASURE began to say their goodbyes as each member shared a heartfelt message, expressing gratitude for the audience. They left the stage, leaving us still buzzing with energy and wishing the night would last longer.
Despite their goodbyes, the lights stayed dim as the crowd chanted “TREASURE,” followed by the members suddenly running back on stage in their tour merch to perform the encore, which was a remix of “GOING CRAZY,” “B.L.T (BLING LIKE THIS)” and “ORANGE.”
Overall, we could feel TREASURE’s excitement and passion in their performance — their stage presence was captivating and brought up the energy through their expressive high notes and synchronized dance moves.
For newcomers unfamiliar with TREASURE and their music, the concert offered an unforgettable experience, and for longtime fans, it was a dream come true.
It felt like an honor to witness an important milestone for the group as they finally connect with its U.S. fans — after seeing their performances in person, we know what songs we’ll be playing on repeat for the next month.
