With impromptu dances and lively singing, students at the Palo Alto Teen Arts Council’s Open Mic Night on Friday set the stage for future events with creativity and community engagement.
The Open Mic Night has been hosted six times in the past, but for the first time this year. The event includes onstage performances such as karaoke and dances.
According to TAC co-president Eesha Samant, this Open Mic Night event was an overall success, and the TAC hopes to keep it going with more events in the future.
“The goal of this event was to just have people that love to sing, perform and dance come, and I think we definitely accomplished that goal,” Samant said. “We had a lot of amazing performances tonight. In the future, we plan to do events once every month or two.”
Junior Keerthi Raj, who performed an impromptu dance with her friends, said she found the event to be a good way to socialize with others.
“It was super fun,” Raj said. “I got to hang out with my friends and perform a really cool dance. I think ours had the most energy and talent.”
Samant said the lower turnout of around fifteen people was caused by a decrease in marketing.
“This event had a lower turnout than our previous Open Mics,” Samant said. “This is due to a lot of our members from TAC graduating, so we are a smaller group than previous years. It’s a little difficult for us to market the events.”
According to sophomore Katrina Haggerty, who delivered a speech on the history of trains in Palo Alto, she enjoyed the creative freedom the event provided.
“I liked how you could do anything on the mic, and also the free food,” Haggerty said. “I really love this event, and I would recommend it for creative people.”
