The boy’s track and field team is off to a promising start to the season after strong performances at the season opener against St. Francis High School and California High School, as well as a sweep in the first league meet against Lynbrook High School.
The boys won by 63 points at Lynbrook, finishing with 95 points.
At St. Francis, the 400 and mile relay teams both won with times of 44.64 seconds and 3:45.42 minutes, respectively. The 400 relay time won again over Lynbrook.
Individuals also showed thier talents early on.
“Will [Frazier], Trenton [Hart] and freshman Daniel Jones did great,” head boys’ coach Jason Fung said. “As did Bobby Holman and Fred Koloto in the throws and Julius [Berezin] and Willie [Xiang] in the 800.”
“I got a PR (personal record) in the 400, with a time of 52 seconds,” Xiang said.
Frazier and Hart came in first and second respectively in both the 100 and 200 meter sprints. Jones kept up with his senior teammates in the 100 with a time of 11.4 seconds. Hart placed first at Lynbrook in the 100 too. Fraizer also showed a first placed finish at Lynbrook in the 200.
Freshman Philip MacQuitty, finished an impressive first in both the 800 and the mile with times of 2:11:05 and 4:43:16 at Lynbrook.
Koloto threw the discus 129’11”, a first place finish, and Dennis Muaka came in third with a 120’7” throw. At Lynbrook Koloto also finished first with a throw of 131’2”. Frazier came in second in the long jump with 1 19’10 and Sophomore Bobby Holman followed with a jump of 19’7. 50. At Lynbrook Holman finished first, with a jump of 19’7.50. Mike Scott continued the strong showing of field events with a first place finish in the high jump, with a 5’10” jump.
Coach Fung is looking forward to a successful season.
“We are looking for a lot of good things to come from the boy’s varsity team this year,” Fung said.
Xiang shares this enthusiasm.
“Watch out for this years track team and next year’s cross-country team,” Xiang said. “We have a lot of potential to get into the state meet.”
