Students in AB Calculus are enjoying the increased leg room now that a third AB Calculus class has been added after class sizes exceeded 40 students. The new class has 23 students and is taught by Deanna Chute. Chute is now teaching five classes.
Antink said the 2006 school year started with only two AB calculus class with 36 and 37 students each. With students dropping down from the higher laned BC Calculus class into the AB classes, the class size was only growing.
According to Chute, 40 students literally did not fit in one classroom. In Misha Vereyken’s second period class in room P1, students were forced to take notes from the floor because of a lack of desks in the classroom.
"We decided to add another class [in part] because we were afraid that the students [in AB Calc] would drop because of the lack of attention from the teachers," Antink said.
After talking to principal Scott Laurence, Antink was able to get the necessary funding for another class. According to Antink $20,000 was needed to pay for teacher expenses for the new class.
Chute’s new class now resides in Antink’s former BC Calculus classroom. The BC class has moved to Chemistry teacher Kathy Lawrence’s room in the science building.
"We are so grateful to be able to use Ms. Lawrence’s room," Antink said. "This is just one example as to how well the staff gets along."
