The Healthy Choice Freshmen sprinted their way into second place today with an impressive yet controversial performance at the lunchtime rally, knocking the toga-donning seniors into third place. The seniors are now more than 100 points behind the first-place juniors.
The Freshmen were victorious in two of the three contests at the lunchtime rally, taking home the top spot in both the water balloon contest and the no-handed Lifesaver find, where participants stick their faces in a pie tin full of color-coded condiments to find a lone Lifesaver candy. The Freshmen’s bowl was full of cheese sauce, the sophomore’s full of ketchup, and the junior’s and senior’s full of mustard and relish, respectively.
The contests, however, were controversial in the minds of many Paly Seniors.
In the water balloon toss, the preliminary match between the seniors and the Freshmen had to be repeated after the judges ruled the match as unfair. The freshmen repeatedly dropped their balloon though it remained intact, while the Seniors’ balloon broke on the first drop. In the second match the Seniors lost again.
"It was fun to participate. It felt great when we beat the seniors twice in a row," freshman participant Scott White said.
More controversy surrounded the seniors in the Lifesaver find. Senior John Hall was unable to come up with the green Lifesaver, coming in last place, still searching for it minutes after the other classes had already finished. Expletive cries of contempt came from the senior bleachers, who felt that the contest was rigged.
"It tasted awful, horrible and I could never find it," Hall said.
Upon further inspection after the contest was over, the Lifesaver was found in the pie tin, though it had melted to the bottom, falling victim to the afternoon sun.
"It was in there," Spirit Commissioner, senior, Ryan Giordano said, denying claims of conspiracy. "I think Spirit Week is turning ugly."
According to Spirit Commissioner junior Alexis Medina, the Seniors were docked at least 20 points for their unsportsmanlike and offensive cheers.
Not all was disastrous for the seniors today, as they were able to win the "Best Dressed" contest at the end of the rally. The seniors managed to have enough breath left to show the most spirit by yelling the loudest for the "Caesar salad dressing" toga outfit modeled by Roy Newman.
The other classes followed in salad dressing style. The Juniors were Thousand Island, dressed in island attire, the sophomores, Ranch dressing, in cowboy attire, and the freshmen healthy choice, dressed in sports attire.
The spirit commissioners announced a new contest at the rally, in which classes will each have a jar in the library full of candies. Students will attempt to guess the number of candies in their class’ jar for a chance to win two tickets to the Homecoming Dance on Saturday.
"The little jars add a little more fun to the week," Giordano said.
The festivities continue on Wednesday. Day 3 is class color day, with each class dressing in their class t-shirts and colors.
Point totals through Day 2:
First: Juniors 450
Second: Freshman 375
Third: Seniors 347.5
Fourth: Sophomores 287.5
