Administrators and student council members decided to raise the price of parking permits from $60 to $75 for carpoolers and $100 to $110 for individuals for the 2006-2007 school year.
According to ASB president Mohammed Abid, the primary reason for increasing the money of the parking permits is to fund projects that are intended to beautify the parking lot. Additionally, prices will be increased to compensate for students who cheat on the permit system. Abid believes that many people steal $35-$40 from Paly each year by purchasing carpool permits, but not carpooling.
"The carpool tickets are still cheaper than individual tickets, but the increase in the price gives up a little more so at least we’re more compensated for cheating than before," Abid said.
The administrators decided to increase the money, while the Student Council decided how to spend the money. The money collected from the parking permits goes directly to the student body, Abid said. Although the Student Council ultimately manages the money earned from the increase in permit prices, administrators have asked that 15 percent of the money go to improving parking lot conditions.
The extra money will be used based on other needs of the student body.
"In general, we use the money for student body expenses, like dances, spirit week, and prom," Abid said.
"The student activity director determines needs based on the activities," Julia Sing, the auditor, said.
