The undefeated Paly swim teams will face off against archrival Gunn High School at Gunn this Friday at 3:15 p.m.
Both the varsity boys and girls have 3-0 league records and have high expectations of their performance on Friday. Gunn is also undefeated in league with a 2-0 record.
Head coach Danny Dye reflected the mood during Wednesday’s pre-meet practice. "This is the big meet, the one that everyone wants," Dye said. "They have a good team and it will be a good competition. We will have to swim at our best. That said, I think we’ll do well. The varsity boys should win, the girls should win, and the JV teams should do really well too."
However, some team members were more enthusiastic than Dye about the team’s prospects against Gunn. "Gunn is not a problem," according to varsity girl’s swimmer freshman Liv Jensen.
TAccording to Dye, this meet will the first one where the varsity girls are swimming at full strength, and the varsity girls are favored to win against Gunn.
"We have a very good chance of winning," varsity girl’s captain senior Brittany Webster said. "We are preparing. Because they are our rivals we will make sure that we are prepared."
The varsity boys face a tougher challenge from the Gunn varsity boys but are undaunted.
"This is the biggest, most important meet in the league," varsity boys captain senior Alec Goldfield said. "It will be our best competition. We have strong people in each event. I think we’re a good team with more talent."
Varsity swimmer junior Chan Kim agreed with Goldfield. "We’ve been training really hard and we’re going to expect nothing less than success," Kim said.
The varsity boys and girls teams ordered shirts specifically for the meet, just to spite Gunn, according to Goldfield. The front of the green t-shirt shows a picture of the Paly Vikings, and the back says, "Who’s your daddy."
Associate head coach Melinda Mattes of Gunn’s varsity and JV teams is equally enthusiastic about the meet. "It’s a good rivalry, and there are lots f good swimmers on both teams. Paly is traditionally very strong, and its always good to compete against a top notch team. We’ll see who wins."
Despite pool construction that has forced the Paly teams to practice at Stanford’s Avery Aquatics Center, the team has managed to continue training aggressively. Dye had high praise for the director of the Aquatics Center.
"The Aquatics director at Avery has done a wonderful job accommodating us," Dye said. Even with all the groups that swim here during our practice, we get the space we need."
At 3:15 p.m this Friday at Gunn, the Paly swim teams will square off against Gunn High School.
