Analysis: Diversity (or the lack thereof) in Hollywood awards
January 22, 2020
Hollywood awards, such as the Oscars and the Golden Globes, are notorious for systematic discrimination against people of color in both who is nominated as well as the winners.
The Oscars, tagged with the infamous hashtag #OscarsSoWhite in 2016, causes controversy and outrage during award season due to a lack of diverse racial representation in the nominees.
While over the years the issue has marginally improved, these award ceremonies continue to receive backlash.
Many movies and television shows have been casting more people of color but they continue to be overlooked in the nominations for big awards. This is seen, most often, on the days after the ceremony when viewers disagree with the winners and notice that the productions they thought deserved to win, casted many people of color which sheds light on the discrimination in these awards.
Here is a timeline showing the progression of people of color in Hollywood awards.
All data was drawn from Golden Globe Awards and the Academy Awards database.
