Following a strong season, Palo Alto High School’s coed wrestling team (2-2-0) stumbled at the dual meet against Wilcox High School, 43-31.
Among the victories, senior Calvin Grewal and junior Andrew Wang dominated their opponents, while sophomore Dara Heydarpour had a close win.
Though sophomore Al Lee lost her match, teammates say she fought well.
“[Lee] was always on the attack and did not give up for a second,” senior Elliot Clark said. “She deserves some recognition.”
With all but four varsity wrestlers recovering from injuries, Coach Jonathan Kessler hopes for quick progress as both the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League finals and Central Coast Section Championships are coming up in February.
“We have some injuries and that’s not an excuse,” Kessler said. “But the wrestlers out on the mat, we gotta do a little bit better fighting.”
Senior Aishaah Maas remains optimistic for girls’ CCS Championships this weekend.
“There were a lot of mistakes we had made, but it’s nothing that we can’t fix,” Maas said. “[Junior] Masa [Perez] and I should be doing pretty well. We’re ranked in CCS [and] we know we’re seeded pretty high.”
The next match will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, at Fremont High School.
