The Palo Alto High School baseball team’s (4-1-1,1-0) first home De Anza league game, against the Cupertino High School Pioneers (2-3,0-1), was postponed after less than one inning of play on Friday due to heavy winds and rain.

During infield practice, both the pitcher’s mound and home plate tarps were rushed out in order to preserve the field. Initially, the periodic rain made it difficult to determine whether or not the game should be played. After less than one inning of play; however, both teams agreed it became clear that it could not be completed.

Midway through the first inning, after the Vikings had jumped to a 3-1 lead, the umpires gathered and decided that the conditions made the game too tough to continue.

Senior third baseman Riley Schoeben said the team came prepared to play, no matter what the circumstances.

“We knew there was a good chance that our game would be cancelled but we came into it expecting to play,” Schoeben said. “The elements just made it impossible to play the game so I’m glad we got out of there and we will hopefully continue next week.”

According to Schoeben, the Vikings will hopefully play a rematch against the Pioneers this coming week.
