Palo Alto and Gunn high schools suspend football rivalry

Palo Alto High School  and Gunn High School have decided to end their annual football rivalry for two years. The athletic departments have discussed the decision since spring last year because of a lack of competitiveness.

“It wasn’t very competitive. That was the bottom line,” said Paly Athletic Director and head football coach Earl Hansen.

Before this year, the rivalry has met 48 consecutive times and Paly leads the series, 35-13. The last time Gunn won the game was in 2002.

Paly will replace Gunn on its schedule with Palma High School of Salinas.

Other Paly sports teams will continue their rivalries with Gunn.

“Other sports are going to continue because they are in the same league. Both men’s and women’s basketball will play Gunn this year,” Hansen said.

The rivalry is not over forever, either. The game could still be played in the future according to Hansen.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if they brought it back,” Hansen said. “The rivalry is obviously historic.”
