In the past four years at Palo Alto High School, there has been a constant shift of athletic directors: Earl Hansen, Jason Fung and Kathi Bowers have all occupied the position in that time span. Next year, Paly will be experiencing yet another change as Assistant Athletic Director Therren Wilburn will take over the head athletic director position at the start of the 2017-18 school year.
Early playoff exits are a sports team’s worst nightmare. Palo Alto High School athletics in particular have experienced this in the past few years; from the boys’ basketball team losing in the first round of the Central Coast Section playoffs two years in a row, to the girls’ soccer team being eliminated in the first round of CCS after going undefeated during the regular season. The varsity baseball team (3-2, 0-0) has experienced heartbreak in the early rounds of CCS during the past three seasons after being the top-seed in the Open division after the regular season, and is determined to break the “first seed curse” during the 2017 season.
A good amount of the students attending Palo Alto High School have lived in or around the city of Palo Alto for most of, if not all, their lives. For those who haven't, they know that transitioning to a new home can be tough. Having new teachers, making new friends, being in a new environment, and getting involved in new sports teams and school organizations can be a very difficult transition. Boys' basketball (19-3, 10-0) hosts one of these Palo Alto newcomers.
