The Palo Alto Unified School District expects to have $2.3 million dollars cut from its budget in the upcoming 2012-2013 school year, according to school board President Melissa Baten-Caswell.“We will get cut,” Baten-Caswell said in a recent interview with a Palo Alto High School journalism class. “The projection now is about $189 dollars per student.”Baten-Caswell would not speculate as to how these budget issues would be fixed in the future. She did however note that other districts have cut art programs, or shortened the school year. According to Baten-Caswell, PAUSD was able to avoid having cutbacks have a significant impact on students in the 2011-2012 school year by increasing class sizes. However Baten-Caswell knows that this is only a temporary fix as class sizes can only be increased so much, and soon more cuts will need to be made.“This year you may have noticed that some of [the] classes are bigger than last year. This is not your imagination,” Baten-Caswell said. “Obviously this is not a sustainable decision.” According to Baten-Caswell another possible fix is to cut electives with low enrollment. However Baten-Caswell would not speculate as to which electives could find themselves on the chopping block in the years to come.“When they take money out of the budget they don’t just add it back into the budget the next year, and next year looks worse than this year,” Baten-Caswell said.
