Palo Alto High School seniors continue to hold the lead after the fourth day of Spirit Week, with a cumulative score of 942.5 points.
The juniors are in second place with a score of 842.5 points, the sophomores in third with 527.5 points and the freshmen bring up the rear with 387.5 points.
The points came during a lunchtime rally at the football field that began with class cheers, followed by hula-hoop and tug-of-war competitions. In the hula-hoop race, 10 students from each class lined up holding hands and passed a hula-hoop down the line without breaking form. Juniors emerged victorious from the final round against the seniors and proceeded to chant: “junior upset.” Freshmen came in third place and sophomores finished last. Eight students from each class participated in the tug-o-war event. Seniors placed first, juniors second, sophomores third and freshmen last.
“I thought it went well for the juniors,” Associated Student Body Communications Officer Charlie Dulik said. “We have strength over the underclassmen and I hope to continue to use that well in the dunk contest at the advisory rally.”
The total points for the lunch rally were as follows: seniors with 150 points, juniors with 135 points, sophomores with 70 points and freshmen with 55 points. Later, at another rally, during Advisory, classes faced off again with a best dressed competition in which seniors took the title with support from sophomores and freshmen.
The rally also included a dunk contest and a three-point basketball contest. Unlike in previous years, ASB allowed students on the basketball team to participate in the three-point contest.
“When we allow them [the basketball players] to play it will be more competitive,” ASB President Uma Veerappan said. The players were given one minute to shoot as many baskets from the three-point line as possible. Junior girls took the lead with senior, freshman and sophomore girls in second, third and fourth place, respectively. Sophomore boys won with senior, junior and freshman boys in second, third and fourth place, respectively.
Seniors earned 395 points at the advisory rally, juniors 345, sophomores 150 and freshmen 120.
“The advisory rally was good but the lunch rally wasn’t as good as I wanted it to be because we weren’t loud enough,” sophomore ASB officer Alex Hammer said. The current jar wars totals are as follows: seniors with -8,363 points, juniors with -2,408 points, sophomores with -7,562 points and freshmen with -1,584 points. There will be four jars in the library for each class until the end of school tomorrow. Placing a penny in a jar will give one point to that corresponding class while contributing any other form of change and bills will subtract that many points from the class. ASB will award spirit week points to the winning class for jar wars; however, the amount of spirit week points awarded is still to be decided.
Tomorrow’s Spirit Week theme is Paly pride. Freshmen, sophomores and juniors wear green and white and seniors wear camouflage apparel. There will be a rally on the quad at lunch and a rally on the football field after school to showcase floats and spirit dances.
