The Palo Alto High School boys’ tennis team (8-3, 1-3) defeated Mountain View High School (6-4, 4-1), 5-2, at home on Monday by dominating doubles play.Paly swept the doubles on its way to victory in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League match-up. Seniors Lucas Fodor and Scott Monismith battled for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, win at No. 1 doubles while junior Justin Wang and sophomore Charlie Dulik won 6-3, 7-5, at No. 2 and senior Senior Andy Hammer and sophomore Mason Haverstock won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3.“My second serve wasn’t consistent, which is something that I need to improve on,” Haverstock said. “However, I feel that we played really well and our whole team all had good games today.”Freshman Austin Leung lost, 5-7, 1-6, at No. 1 singles and freshman Blake Smith lost, 2-6, 5-7, at No. 2 singles. Senior Chirag Krishna and junior Dar Bareket-Shavit both won their matches at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Bareket-Shavit didn’t drop a game on his way to a, 6-0, 6-0, victory while Krishna won by forfeit as Mountain View lacked a fourth singles player.Despite the two singles losses, head coach Andy Harader said the team had a solid performance. “I think we played pretty well,” Harader said. “The doubles got off a really good start and won all three games. Blake [Smith] almost pulled out an amazing second set. Austin [Leung] played really well at first but then other guy caught fire. But Dar [Bareket-Shavit] swept his opponent, which was really good.” According to Harader, the boys don’t have much to improve on except for two key categories.“We don’t have too much time to practice in between games, but we need to get the ball up the net and put our volleys over,” Harader said. Wang only saw one weakness in the team’s performance on Monday. “The only thing we need to improve on is visualizing the game before we start,” Wang said.Overall, the team managed to pull out a key win over Mountain View.“Mountain View is not a hack team so I feel happy that we prevailed [over] them,” Harader said. “ It was a good win for us.”The Vikings will play their next game at 3:30 p.m. on Monday against Carlmont at Palo Alto.
