After weathering five consecutive ties, the Palo Alto High School’s boys’ soccer team (5-2-4) finally got its first win in nearly a month, beating Santa Clara High School (1-6-3) 2-0 in a league match on Wednesday.
Paly secured the victory with first half goals from sophomore striker Skyler Felt and senior midfielder John Richardson. The Vikings were led by the strong offensive efforts of Felt, Richardson and sophomore forward Matt Waymouth.
Junior center back Gerrit van Zyll and senior midfielder Nittai Malchin played strong defense while senior keeper Austin Shiau earned another shutout in his second game back from injury.
In the second half, Paly’s attack was not as successful in finding openings in the Santa Clara defense, but the Vikings still cruised to victory.
The Vikings win came over a welcome opponent, as Santa Clara was the last team that Paly beat before it hit its demoralizing tie streak. Paly now has some momentum with four games remaining in Santa Clara Valley Athletic League play.
The Vikings will play Los Gatos in their next home game on Feb. 9 at 3:30 p.m.
