Students and adults interested in exploring a unique art form- glass blowing- can sign up for Palo Alto High School’s monthly glass weekend workshops.
“This workshop builds on whatever previous experience you may have in glass blowing, and helps you improve your skill and understanding of it,” Paly art teacher David Camner said.
Participants work in pairs and are able to make a variety of objects including paperweights, flowers and maybe even pumpkins, according to Camner.
While glass blowing can be exciting, it has its dangers.
“We encourage people to wear clothes that cover their skin, for safety,” Camner said. “Even though glass blowing can be fun, it is very important to put safety first.”
The workshop is important to the school because it supports the Paly glass program, Camner said.
“Groups of friends and families really enjoy this workshop because it is a fun way to learn the basics about glass blowing,” Camner says. “It supports the Paly glass program and allows members of the community to enjoy.”
Workshops are limited to four people and take place behind room 105 in the art building.
The workshop is offered on Feb. 6-7, March 13-14, April 10-11, May 15-16 and June 5-6. The workshop is $375 per person.
Many students have come out of this workshop with great memories.
“I went to the workshop this past month and really enjoyed it because now I know more about how to make things on my own and understand what I’m doing,” says junior Jacqueline Friduss. “I really encourage other people to sign up if they are interested because even though it takes a lot of work, you learn a lot.”
