The girls’ track team finished its season in the Central Coast Selection trials when the team’s two qualifiers failed to advance to CCS finals this Saturday, May 23, at Gilroy High School.
The two qualifiers for CCS trials were junior Emily Yeates in the 100-meter race and senior Elizabeth Scott in the two mile race. In order to move on to CCS finals, one must finish top two of the assigned heat or top eight in the overall combined times.
Yeates placed third in her heat with a time of 13.05 seconds, and Scott placed 19th in the 2-mile event with a time of 11 minutes, 40 seconds. The two mile event had two heats, but ranking by heats for this event has not been released yet.
“It was kind of a mentally tough race,” Scott said, “but I didn’t except to make it to CCS finals this year, as I didn’t start running the two-mile until pretty late in the season…so I’m happy with how far I got. It’s sort of a bittersweet ending.”
One of the challenges at CCS trials was the windy weather.
“It was pretty windy, especially in the backstretch,” Scott said. “It was hard when I got separated from one pack and I didn’t have anybody to draft off of for a while.”
