After defeating Milpitas High School, 7-0, without losing a single set on Wednesday at Paly, the varsity boys’ tennis team is setting a high bar for its performance this season.
“It was good competition,” junior Drew Pearson said. “We just played well; they [Milpitas] gave us a good fight.”
Victories in singles came from senior Sam Wong at No. 1 singles, sophomore Baramee Wongbanchai at No. 2 singles, senior Dan Schwartz at the No. 3 spot, and freshman Nicky Hu at the No. 4 spot.
Doubles wins came from junior Drew Pearson and senior John Mitchell at the No. 1 doubles spot, senior Cory McCroskey and junior Chase Cooper at No. 2 doubles, and juniors Grant Audet and Alex Freeman at the No. 3 doubles spot.
Paly (1-0) won the majority of the matches on Wednesday without losing a single game
“It’s [Milpitas is] a weaker team,” Paly head coach Andy Harader said. “It’ll give us a barometer of how were doing and, as you can see, we’re kind of cleaning up and it’s not a tough match.”
At No. 1 doubles, Pearson and Mitchell lost only one game for a 6-1, 6-0 victory. They felt as if they had a strong performance.
“It went well,” Pearson said. “We played well. Me and my partner did everything we needed to do to get the job done.”
Defeating their opponents, 6-0, 6-0, Audet and Freemen are feeling confident for the rest of the season.
“It was a good warm-up match,” Audet said. “I think we’re looking good for the rest of the season.”
Schwartz also won his first match in two sets, 6-1, 6-0.
Wongbanchai finished his opponent off with a solid 6-0, 6-0 win.
Freshman Nicky Hu was the first off the courts with a 6-0, 6-0, victory at four singles.
