A guide to day trips for spring break

With Spring Break approaching, some are left with only a day or two between vacations, homework and extracurriculars, making it difficult to decide how to spend that time. Here are five ideas on how to make that spare time as fun as possible.

  1. Spend a day in San Francisco
    • In a one-day trip to the city, you can visit the iconic Golden Gate Bridge and the neighboring Golden Gate Park, experience the bustling marketplace Pier 39, and tour numerous museums in the area.
    • Museums:
      • The California Academy of Sciences is one of the largest natural history museums in the world containing over 26 million specimens, according to its website. Tickets cost $15 for students.
      • The Cable Car Museum boasts exhibits that display the history of the cable car, in addition to antique cable cars and equipment. Entrance is free.
      • Other museums: Walt Disney Family museum, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Exploratorium
  2. Enjoy a hike
    • The Baylands Nature Reserve contains 15 miles of hikeable trails. The Baylands offer a variety of activities including hiking, bird watching, and boating. 
    • Hike the Dish. Located at Stanford University, the Dish is a radio telescope that is still in operation. The trail leading up to the Dish is a moderate, 3.98 mile round trip hike that holds a panoramic view of the surroundings every step.
  3. Observe nature at the stunning Big Basins Redwood State Park
    • Relatively close to home, the Big Basins Redwood State Park is California’s oldest State Park, according to its website. It spans across 18,000 acres, and is home to 10,800 acres of redwood, oak, conifer and douglas-fir trees, among other species.
  4. Go restaurant hopping 
    • Town n’ Country Village hosts 18 restaurants in close proximity, making it the perfect place to go restaurant hopping. Popular restaurants include Asian Box, Gott’s Roadside, Howie’s Artisan Pizza, and Jamba Juice. See the full list of restaurants here.

  5. Enjoy the beach at Half Moon Bay
    • Half Moon Bay boasts a wide range of activities ranging from beginner horseback riding to bird-watching, according to its website.
