Teen Arts Council to host second Open Mic night

Palo Alto’s Teen Arts Council is putting on its second Open Mic Night of the year at 7 p.m. on Dec. 8 at the Mitchell Park Community Center’s Teen Center.

According to TAC president Nandini Relan, open mics are events in which high school students from Palo Alto can come and perform anything they want to, including music or comedy.

“Open mics are TAC’s famous event and we’ve been doing it since forever and it’s what we’re known best for,” Relan said.

According to Publicity Officer Emily Zhang, the performances during this open mic night will range from singing to stand-up comedy to improvisational comedy and band performances.

“The idea is that since it’s an open mic, you can perform anything you want in a low stakes environment,” Zhang said.
The turnout for both performers and audience members is expected to be very high. According to Zhang, there were over 120 audience members at the last open mic night. For this open mic night, the number of performers has been capped at 25 acts, Zhang said.
“I’m looking forward to it because they are always some of the best memories of my life, and it is so rewarding to see so many teens come out and have a good time and also [to] see how much talent there is out there to share,” Zhang said.

Relan stresses the many reasons why students enjoy coming to open mic nights and why the events are successful.

“People should come because it’s always super fun and super chill, [there is] free food, and I know there are a lot of people who have said they’ve always wanted to go to an open mic but they never have, and this is a great chance to do so,” Relan said.

According to Relan, signups to perform will be closed soon due to overwhelming demand, but attendance is free for all. If you have any questions about the event, email the organizers here.
