Preview: Vikings’ baseball seeks retribution against league’s top seed

The Palo Alto High School baseball team (11-11, 5-4) will face the Los Gatos Wildcats (19-4, 10-1) for the second time in three days tomorrow, after losing 6-5 on Wednesday in extra innings. The loss is the Vikings third straight, and more importantly eliminates them from any shot at a top seed in the De Anza League.

The Wildcats and the Wilcox Chargers are currently first and second seeds, respectively, heading into the league playoffs. The Vikings, in third, have been outscored 21-7 by their last three opponents.

While seeding and momentum are key elements heading into the playoffs, sophomore pitcher and outfielder Justin Hull says his team needs to make adjustments.

“It was definitely a tough loss,” Hull said. “But we want to come back on Friday, and do everything we can to beat Los Gatos. I think the rest of the season will be spent fixing what needs to be fixed before playoffs, but we also have to get there first.”

The Vikings this time will take on Los Gatos on their home turf. With just three games remaining, Palo Alto looks to win out and secure a playoff berth. An upset of the division’s top team can get the derailed Vikings back on track.

The first pitch of Friday’s game will be 4 p.m. at Paly.
