Paly celebrates Not In Our Schools Week

The Student Diversity Coalition of Palo Alto High School presents Not In Our Schools Week through lunchtime activities this week.

The purpose of Not In Our Schools Week is to “promote identity safety and embrace diversity,” according to the poster distributed throughout the school.

Monday activities included the flag march, San Jose State University’s Grupo Luna y Sol’s performance and the Gay Straight Alliance’s community chain.

Tuesday will feature a stepping performance and an improvisational performance. Additionally, the Christian club will lead a stereotype chain activity, in which students break a paper chain as a way of ending stereotypes.

On Wednesday, Paly Rocks will perform live music, followed by the Juggling Club, which will provide free juggling lessons to interested students. The Chinese Club will sponsor Make a Wish on campus.

The Bhangra Club will perform on Thursday. On that day, henna art will be available on the Quad and the Youth Community Service Interact club will hold a button-making activity.

“YCS Interact club is hosting a button-making activity in which people can make buttons saying encouraging messages that support Not In Our School Week,” YCS co-president Soo Song said.

Friday, the last day of Not In Our Schools Week, will feature Best Buddies, who will give a presentation entitled “Spread the word to end the word” and educational therapist Steve Corelis from Sun Project with a disability simulation activity. Also on that day, Unity will lead two activities, one about dissolving stereotypes and the other about making promise necklaces.

All activities will be held on the Quad during lunch.
