President Barack Obama will visit Palo Alto’s Facebook headquarters for a digital “town hall” meeting this Wednesday to talk about the economy, according to a White House press release issued today.

The event will be streamed live and can be viewed at the White House Facebook page, where those interested are encouraged to RSVP and submit questions for the president on the page’s wall. Event information can also be found at the Facebook page.

The White House will stream the town hall meeting to http://www.whitehouse.gov/live and https://apps.facebook.com/facebooklive/ as well.

“I hope you’ll take a break from either friending or de-friending each other to RSVP,” Obama said in his video announcement of the event, bluntly highlighting the transformation of modern communication. The White House’s extensive use of social media, as well as its decision to hold the town hall at Facebook headquarters, is a reminder that it is the first administration to have such prevalent and direct connections to its constituents.

Facebook takes center stage in Palo Alto this week for another reason; a day after the town hall meeting, the Palo Alto Parent Teacher Association will hold a workshop on “Digital Friendship” Thursday evening at 7 p.m. at Palo Alto High School’s English Resource center. The PTA aims to discuss the encroachment of social networks upon student life, and negative and positive aspects of social networking.

As the world continues to gravitate around the Internet, social networking is quickly becoming the modus operandi for modern communication, and many different groups, the Palo Alto PTA included, are beginning to recognize the necessity of learning to navigate social networks successfully and to discuss what the change means for the community.

The forum will involve a collection of parents, community members, students and staff at Paly, including Principal Phil Winston. All are welcome.
