Wrestling wins first league title in 25 years

The Palo Alto High School wrestling team (5-1) looks forward to competing Central Coast Section Championships, after claiming its first Santa Clara Valley Athletic League title in 25 years at Wilcox High School on Saturday.

The Vikings topped the competition with a total of 190 points to claim their first league championship since 1986.

Cupertino High School, the regular season champion, and Fremont High School followed in second and third place with 180.5 and 175 points, respectively.

Paly had three individual champions in juniors Joey Christopherson, Nick Ortiz and Kalen Gans.

Christopherson won the 121 pound division with a 5-1 decision while Ortiz took home the 127 pound trophy with a 3-0 decision. Gans, currently ranked first in CCS at 162 pounds, placed first with a 4-2 decision that improved on his impressive breakout season.

In total, the Vikings qualified an impressive 11 wrestlers for the Central Coast Section tournament. The Vikings had to place in the top six of their weight class to qualify.

Other Paly wrestlers that qualified were sophomore Trent Marshall who placed fifth at 130, freshman Gunnar Felt who placed sixth at 142 pounds, junior Jared Swezey-Gleason who placed fifth at 147 pounds, junior Ryan Oshima who placed third at 154 pounds, sophomore Erik Anderson who placed fifth at 173 pounds, freshman Andrew Frick who finished fourth at 191 pounds, senior Jose Tochez who finished third at 217 and sophomore Spencer Drazovich who finished sixth at 287 pounds.

CCS will take place at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Independence High School.
