After school rally concludes exciting Spirit Week

voice-picture

Seniors perform their Spirit Week dance to energetic music to suit their class theme of aliens. Their float was the most complex, featuring a rotating spaceship among futuristic decorations. – Mike LinDespite five full days of competitions, cheers, clashing colors and at times, milk throwing, Spirit Week came to a close today with all of the classes coalescing in the Palo Alto High School football field bleachers as one giant sea of green.

Of course, just because everyone was wearing the same or similar colors did not mean that the mostly playful animosity had disappeared. The classes were there for one reason: it was the last push to accumulate spirit points to defeat other classes. There were more than a couple of “borderline cheers,” but the event nonetheless proceeded smoothly.

“There was excellent energy,” Administrative Teacher on Special Assignment Trinity Klein said. “I think things stayed pretty positive.”

Because of time constraints due to the 3:25 release time for students, some traditional elements of the after school rally had been completed during Thursday’s lunch rally. This year’s after school rally only featured class floats, spirit dances and a short performance by the cheer team.

The freshman float looked similar to a Frosted Flakes billboard ad, prominently featuring their mascot, Tony the Tiger. Even though it was this class’s first Spirit Week, they were successful, earning enough points to briefly lead the juniors after Tuesday.

“[Spirit Week] was kind of rocky, but overall I think we did well,” Freshman Class President Alex Hammer said. “I thought our float turned out well, and the dance wasn’t bad considering we’re freshmen.”

The sophomore float, in line with their America theme, was a large replica of the White House. It was their dance, however, that stood out. Their upbeat performance to the tune of American-themed music elicited cheers from nearly all corners of the bleachers.

“Our float was good, but our dance was fantastic,” sophomore Claire Marchon said.

The junior float was adorned a pirate ship and large green shark reminiscent of Jaws. Their dance featured a sword fight and a musical medley with a selection from the hit movie, Pirates of the Caribbean.

“The spirit dance competition was tough this year so I’m really proud of both our float and our spirit dance,” junior Chloe Koseff, who performed in her class dance, said. “I think that spirit week was really successful for the junior class. We started out the first two days pretty badly, but once we unified as a class we were able to pull ahead.”

The seniors, as is the custom, had the most complex float with a rotating spaceship. The music selection featured songs that were in line with senior theme of aliens and energized the entire class to dance in the bleachers.

“I think this was the best spirit week I’ve ever had at Paly,” Senior Class President Jack Smale said. “And I think the senior class can say the same.”

Overall, most people seem to be pretty happy with the way Spirit Week 2010 turned out.

“I think everything turned out really well,” Associated Student Body Spirit Commissioner George Brown said. “Come to Homecoming if you want to know the results.”

In an effort to increase homecoming dance, Brown said that ASB does not plan to officially release the scores of today’s rallies until the dance. By then, they will be able to add them to the points from Jar Wars, dance attendance, and potential deductions for lack of bleacher cleanliness and negative cheers.

Nonetheless, the The Paly Voice has gathered the results of some of today’s lunchtime activities and Jar Wars. Seniors won today’s ‘best dressed’ competition and were just edged out by the juniors in the mattress relay, leaving freshmen and sophomores to tie for third. The sophomores won Jar Wars by a landslide with a total of 16,430 points; seniors came in second with 8,012 points, followed by the freshmen with 7,088 and the juniors with -3,231. Currently, the first place class will receive 150 points; second place, 100 points; third place, 75 points; and last place, 50 points, but ASB has indicated that that may change.

Tickets to homecoming will be available online and at the door. Approximately 200 tickets have already been sold online, according to Brown.

Editor’s Note: The original version of the story incorrectly stated that the sophomores had -3,231 points, when it should have been the juniors who had -3,231 points. The current version of the story reflects this change.
