Sophomores sweep second rally in Spirit Week

Seniors dressed in green, juniors in yellow, sophomores in red and freshmen in orange, students rallied together for the second time on the quad Wednesday, facing harder competitions and new cheers.

"The amount of spirit was much better today," junior Katie Barich said. "Everyone was more competitive."

The first activity was the classic saltine competition, where each class had a boy and girl representative who had to finish their stack of saltine crackers and then whistle for the judge. The sophomore class did particularly well and placed first, shocking the seniors, who came in second. The juniors followed in third place and the freshman in fourth.

Meanwhile, the seniors challenged their competition with the classic cheers of "2,4,6,8, who’s the class you want to date? The seniors, the seniors!" The green team also premiered some less familiar cheers, such as, "We’ve got turkey, we’ve got chicken, we’re so good we’re finger lickin’." These challenges spurred the juniors and seniors into a cheer contest, while the freshman attempted an "Everywhere we go…" cheer.

The second competition, a relay race, involved more coordination than some Paly students could handle. Each class entered six representatives who were timed on how fast they could hoola hoop, hop through tires, and spin around a baseball bat ten times.

The seniors went first, setting a low precedent for the other classes.

"They had a rocky start," junior Silvia Tuerros-Cossio said. "They were getting very dizzy!"

The seniors made up for the rough start however, placing second in the competition. The juniors went next, placing third, then the sophomores, again placing first, and finally the freshmen in fourth place.

The hot topic of the day was how the administration was going to deal with seniors wearing the unapproved "Herbology" shirts. The "Herbology" theme was not approved by the administration due to its drug-related reference, and students were told before the start of Spirit Week that points would be deducted from their class’s score for each person wearing an unapproved tee-shirt.

Now after two wins, the sophomores feel confident that they will place well in the Spirit Week competition.

"This was awesome! We definitely dominated!" sophomore Pauline Slakey said.
