Spirit Week starts off with a splash

The quad rings with deafening cheers from the four class bleachers. At the top of the scale are the seniors, decked out in ‘80s attire; next down the line are the juniors, dressed in pirate garb, the sophomores in red carpet glamour, and freshmen in their favorite sports star uniforms.

Paly’s annual Spirit Week commenced today with a lunch rally, filling students with zeal that rocked the stands.

“This was the best rally, I had a great spot in the bleachers,” senior Max Lu said.

The first event placed three male and female representatives each from every class in seated lines behind a large tub of water. The object of this competition was to completely fill the bucket at the back of the line by passing a small bucket filled with water over the contestants’ heads. Gigantic speakers blasted hits from the ‘80s as the four teams started passing the buckets down their lines.

The crowds screamed with enthusiasm as the juniors started up with the classic cheer, “Let’s go juniors, let’s go juniors!” The seniors countered this with, “Hey-hey, ho-ho, that junior class has got to go!”

The seniors finished first, followed closely by the sophomores, then the juniors, and at last the freshmen.

The second activity of the day brought out the class presidents, freshman Wayne Lee, sophomore Lowell Reade, junior Loretta Shen, and senior Robin Chang in a competition to determine which president was best dressed. This led to a dance contest between the junior and senior presidents on the stage, where seniors and then juniors spontaneously rushed onstage in support of their respective leaders. There was no a clear winner for either contest, and the rally ended in a huge dance-fest in the quad.

“I think it was a great opening rally,” Student Activities Director Joann Vaars said.

Judging from the excitement that ensued during the dance contest, the Paly student body is enthusiastic about Spirit Week.

“Spirit week is a fun way to get the school to bond,” junior Morgan Davies said.
