Local contest to end soon

If you haven’t yet decided to enter the third annual Musings of the Mind’s Eye creative writing contest, your time is nearly up.

The deadline for the local contest, organized by Insight Education, a Cupertino-based college preparatory organization, is Sunday at midnight.

The creative writing contest is open to all high school students living in the cities of Palo Alto, East Palo Alto, Cupertino, San Jose, Los Gatos, Saratoga, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Milpitas, Fremont, Union City, Hayward, and San Mateo, and submissions will be accepted via email until the deadline.

The theme is "tradition," according to Ajit Jain, co-leader of Insight Education, which is co-sponsoring the contest with the Books Inc. in Mountain View.

"We decided to pick this theme because we felt that anyone, irrespective of their ethnicity of cultural background could relate to the theme in a creative fashion," Jain said.

In addition to the goal of fostering creativity outside of school, the sponsors hope to provide a realistic chance for local students to receive recognition for their work.

"The nationwide contests are great, but really are only available to a limited audience," said Purvi Mody, who shares leadership of Insight Education with Jain.

Beyond meeting the contest requirements, Jain said that the judges would not be looking for a particular angle.

"We encourage them to interpret the theme in any way that they see fit. After all, that is the essence of creative writing," Jain said.

Judging will be on a five-point scale for creativity, impact, style, voice, depth, theme, writing skill, and topic of story.

Entries are to be typed, double spaced, and shorter than 1500 words. Also, they must come with an application, available at the Insight Web site and Insight Cupertino office.

A reception to honor participants will be held in June at Book Inc. Winners will be honored at a reception at Books Inc., in Mountain View at 7 p.m. June 28. All community members are invited to listen to the winners read their work.

"We would like to encourage students to become comfortable with ambiguity in order to better prepare themselves for the challenges they will face in college and beyond," Jain said.
