Measure A rally to be held at Lucie Stern Center tomorrow

The American Association of University Women is holding a rally in support of Measure A from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. tomorrow at the Lucie Stern Community Center.

Key speakers will include California State Senator Joe Simitian and Assemblyman Ira Ruskin, along with many other education leaders and community members. There will also be live music from the local bands Hey Mom and Backlight. The event is open to the public, and students and children are invited to attend.

Currently, there are over 2,000 public supporters of the measure, according to the Campaign for Excellence Web site (http://www.campaignforexcellence.org/). Over the past three years, the Palo Alto Unified School District has lost $4.4 million in annual state funding, and enrollment growth has added $3 million in annual costs, according to the campaign.

To balance the budget, there have been $6.5 million worth of program cuts, and $3.5 million has been taken out of the emergency reserves, district officials contend.
The November 2004 parcel tax of $521 per property, Measure I, was meant to replace the current one, but it fell short by less than 1% of the required 66.7% needed to pass. The district is trying again with Measure A, which charges $28 less per property.
