The Palo Alto Police department is currently in negotiation with a man suspected of suicidal thoughts who has barricaded himself in his home on Sutter Ave., according to the Palo Alto Police Department.
Police have blockaded the 800 block of Sutter Ave., between Ross Rd. and Colorado Ave., and are speaking to the man through a loudspeaker.
The man, according to a neighbor who wished to remain anonymous, broke the windshield of a car outside of his home at around 4 p.m. this afternoon, after which he stormed angrily into his home. The man’s aunt and mother were evacuated from the house shortly thereafter, when police were contacted.
When the police negotiations started around 5:30 p.m., according to neighbors, a negotiator for the police department was speaking to the man about every two minutes, asking him to step out the front door with his hands up.
As night fell, the requests came less frequently from the police, who called in a SWAT team at about 9:30 p.m.
“The residence is surrounded, there are officers in the front and the back,” the negotiator said. “The officers want to speak with you and make sure you are okay. If you cannot step outside please pick up the phone and call 911.”
According to the police, the man has been uncooperative with officers and they have had no response from the man for about four hours.
The negotiator is now telling the man that if he does not emerge from his house, the SWAT team will enter the home.
