Undefeated Vikings beat Gunn in league championship game

Paly girls varsity water polo team clinched the league championship after beating cross-town rival Gunn on Nov. 8. Paly won 7-3, which left them with an impressive undefeated league record.

Paly played its last league game against Gunn at Lynbrook under lights in the pouring rain. Paly’s amazing defense did not allow Gunn to score any goals until the fourth quarter. Gunn started the game off very slowly, while Paly got business taken care of right away.

Junior Remy Champion started the game by winning the sprint for Paly. Both teams moved the ball well on offense and looked equal in the first quarter. Towards the end of the quarter Paly sophomore Phoebe Champion scored her first goal of the night, putting Paly on top, 1-0.

In the second quarter, Paly dominated the pool, beginning with P. Champion winning the sprint and scoring a quick goal. Later in the second quarter, P. Champion broke through the Gunn defense and scored a one-on-nobody against Gunn’s goalie senior Kaja Martin. Paly junior Brittany Webster showed great individual talent and also contributed a goal in the second. Although Paly scored four goals in the second quarter, there could have easily been twice as many if it wasn’t for Martin.

Paly senior Emma Feeny showed great effort throughout the game, scoring two goals on the night. The first of these goals came just before half time when she sprinted down the pool and was thrown a perfect pass from R. Champion. Feeny caught the ball and shot the ball high corner. Paly led Gunn, 5-0 at half.

In the third quarter Gunn’s offense led many attacks. They hit the goal post three times, but they weren’t able to score any goals, thanks to great saves by senior goalie Erica Magill. Paly Coach Steven Covec played five of the junior varsity players that moved up for CCS, giving them valuable playing time. While the JV players were in the game, the Vikings scored two goals, one from Webster and one from P. Champion, her fourth goal of the night.

Gunn was scoreless at the end of the third quarter, but scored three goals in the fourth. Gunn sophomore Diana Eaton rallied with a goal, putting Gunn on the scoreboard. Paly turned over the ball many times due to shot clock violations and fouls, while Gunn continued to attack well. In the last three minutes of the game, Gunn senior Serena Schlaile scored a beautiful goal, but Gunn was still losing by five. Schlaile was able to beat Paly’s defense and Magill one more time and scored another goal before the game ended.

Although Paly was not able to score any goals in the fourth quarter the Vikings still ended up winning, 7-3. Paly is not content with just winning league, and look forward to the Central Coast Section finals. Paly’s Webster comments, "I am happy that we won the league championships, but the real challenge will be to win CCS."

They faced Aragon in the first round of CCA on Tuesday Nov. 11 at Menlo School and won 14-3 moving on to play Presentation Sat. 15 at 2:45 at St. Francis.
