Vikings remain undefeated with win over Milpitas

The Palo Alto Vikings remain undefeated after a thrilling 31-19 come from behind win against Milpitas, Oct 17.

Viking junior quarterback Nathan Ford started the game with eight consecutive incompletions and Paly turned the ball over three consecutive times.

The team’s mistakes resulted in an interception returned for a 41 yard score by R-Jay Benavidez, and a fumble on the goal line by senior running back Detrich Clay.

According to Clay, the fumble was a bad call by the referee, "During that play, I thought I scored," said Clay, "I could have sworn that I got the ball across the end line, when I stretched out on that play, I let go of the football because I thought I heard the whistle blow. Then I watched the game on tape and realized the ref had a bad angle and made a bad call."

"We gave them everything they got, we are the reason they scored,?" head coach Earl Hansen said.

However, the Vikes soon righted their mistakes and turned the game around. Ford completed nine of eleven passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns.

Ford has been impressive all season throwing for twenty scores and running for several more in Paly’s first six games.

"It was an awesome game," junior tight end Alex Gibson said, "especially the way the whole team turned the game around.?

The Milpitas Trojans (1-2), had three fumbles in the opening half, including a fumbled punt by Benavidez that led to a Vikings touchdown.

The play after the fumble consisted of a Ford pass to senior wide receiver Adam Dexter for 21 yards and a 18-7 lead that Paly took in to half time.

"Our running game had an outstanding game and played really well," head coach Earl Hansen said "Clay had a great game especially since last week he had a concussion. Kiger had a great game as well."

Paly’s running game stayed strong and took pressure off Ford’s throwing arm as senior running back Tydus Kiger had 21 carries for 139 of Paly’s 244 yards on the ground.

After a sloppy start and a fumble at the goal line, senior running back Detrich Clay proved that the concussion that he suffered last week during the 49-40 Paly victory against Homestead, would not slow him down, as he scored in the second quarter with a 22 yard run.

With the score 25-19, Ford clinched the game on a 1 yard scramble for six more points that put the game out of reach with less than five minutes to play.

The Vikings next play at top ranked Los Gatos at 7:30 pm this Friday evening.
