Slow game ends with spectacular Paly victory

Paly’s 13-1 win against Fremont’s baseball team on Monday, May 12, was due mainly to miscommunications between Fremont’s outfielders, resulting in misconnected passes that enabled Paly to maintain its second-place standing in the league.

“We played horrible, that’s all we have to say,” said Fremont’s coach. In fact, Paly outfielders caught all of Fremont’s hits in the sixth inning. In this same inning, the coach and a spectator were expelled because of their questionable comments towards the umpire.

Also in the sixth inning, Mark Wells, a Paly junior was on the verge of being thrown out while running home from third. The ball was thrown to third after it had been hit by the batter-up to second, and was thrown home while Wells was running, but luckily for him, the Fremont defense dropped the ball, allowing Paly another run.

Fremont did manage to make a run in the seventh and final inning, though. One of their players walked to first base, and while two other Fremont batters struck out on every at-bat, he managed to move up a base every time. Eventually, he made it home.

The game started slowly with no runs by any teams for the first two innings. Paly managed to get the first four runs, though.

The longest streak of runs was in the fifth inning, in which Paly gained five runs. Senior Shane Parsons hit to get himself to first. Sophomore Nathan Ford then hit a grounder, which allowed him and Parsons to advance one base. Junior Adam Dexter loaded the bases with a strong hit down the center, and they all got runs when junior Max Pinto hit another ball down the center. Pinto and senior Jason Kelinhoffer also made it home eventually for the full five runs.

The third inning was also a strong one, with four runs for Paly. Kleinhoffer walked to first after four balls, and then ran to second when senior Durell Williams hit the ball down the center. Senior John Picazo then walked to first again, loading the bases. Junior Russ Hagemann then took the bat, and drove it deep into the center, allowing everyone to run home. Hagemann himself was stuck on second, but also made it home after Parsons’ hit.

“Solid all around game,” said Pete Colombo, coach of Paly’s baseball team. “We beat [Fremont] 2 out of 3 times (This game included). The team executed well, we pitched strikes. I’m looking forward to next season.” Despite this seemingly impressive record of Paly wins against Fremont, the win to loss ratio of both teams was quite close. Paly was 10-5 after this game, while Fremont was 9-7.

With only a couple games left in this season, moving from that second place position still seems like a possibility.
